Typical residential or commercial water softeners remove magnesium and calcium ions from your hard water, replacing them with softer, sodium ions. Sodium won’t interfere with your household detergents and soaps, as calcium and magnesium ions will.

Jersey Village water softeners allow your soap and detergent to work more effectively in removing oils and dirt from dishes and clothes. Soft water aids soap in giving you that clean, slippery feel when you have washed. If you install a water softener, you won’t need to use as much soap or detergent, either.

Your water softener unit will usually be placed in your home near the location where water first enters your house. In this way, it softens the water you use for washing and drinking, but not the water you use for gardening and other outside purposes. The unit will contain a few cubic feet of plastic resin that is porous, and covered with molecules to bind to the positive ions in your water.

As water flows over this resin, the magnesium and calcium ions in your hard water will stick to it. This will release sodium ions into your water, to maintain the electrical charge balance of the resin. Sodium ions will be released into your household water, making it softer.

Purified Water Systems… Our Services

PurifiedWaterSystem7 portfoilioAs your Jersey Village water softeners expert will explain, a softener will renew its resin every few days by rinsing it with sodium chloride (salt water). The sodium ions will displace the magnesium and calcium ions on the resin, and the resin will once again become sodium-ion covered.

The rinse water, along with magnesium and calcium ions, is flushed down your drain. Then the system resumes its normal operation. Sodium chloride salt is periodically added to the softener, to prepare the salty water rinses.

If you are concerned about your intake of sodium overall, some softener units include resins that will release potassium into your water, rather than sodium. Expect to pay a bit more for potassium chloride salt than for sodium chloride. Whichever type you choose, you and your family will enjoy bathing, washing and drinking soft water, with fewer chemicals and more health benefits.
